How important are externships in getting into residency ?
Externships are clinical rotations in the United States which allow you to have hands-on experience with US patients. Program directors not only go by scores on the USMLE exams, but a recommendation letter from the doctor under whom you did your externship. This letter can add a great advantage to your application package! There are many students who have scored less on the boards and compensated with a good externship experience. Some universities mention it as a requirement for a complete application package. You will have to be ECFMG certified if you want to do an externship when you are a medical graduate. Externship can only be an added feather !
Is research a must get into a residency program ?
Well, it depends. If the program you are planning to join has a strong research interest, has funded projects for resident research, you would have an advantage if you have had some research projects done in your home country/USA or have your name on publications/poster presentations. Some programs don't add any weightage to research experience in the application process.
When am I ECFMG certified ?
When you have passed Step 1, Step2 CK, Step 2 CS and your medical credentials have been verified ECFMG issues you a certificate. Then you become officially ECFMG certified. This entitles you to apply for Step 3 and also helps in applying for externships.
